What are Cross-Connections?

A cross-connection is any actual or potential connection between a potable water supply and any pipe, vessel, tank, plumbing fixture, equipment or device through which it is possible for used, polluted or contaminated water or any other substance to enter the potable water system.

What is backflow?

Backflow is the undesirable reversal of flow in a potable water system.  When this occurs, other liquids, mixtures, gases, or substances can enter the potable water piping through a cross-connection.

Backflow Preventers

The term "approved backflow preventer" refers to a category of devices that have been evaluated and certified to meet certain standards.  All mechanical equipment eventually requires maintenance or replacement.  There are non-testable, and testable backflow preventers.  Testable backflow preventers are an assembly of a few parts and are referred to as "Backflow Assemblies".  Testable backflow preventers are designed to be tested or repaired in-line and provide a higher degree of reliability than non-testable types.

What is backflow testing?

It is the responsibility of building and premise owners to ensure backflow preventers installed within the building or on the premises are readily accessible, maintained in good working condition and periodically tested by certified individuals; To ensure continued satisfactory operation of a backflow preventer.

How often should backflow testing be done?
  • Testing of a backflow preventer should be done immediately after installation and prior to the device being put into operation.
  • Annual or periodic testing as required by the local authority having jurisdiction.
  • If a backflow preventer has been relocated it shall be cleaned and tested before returning to service.
  • If the supply line piping is altered or changed the backflow preventer shall be tested before returning to service.
  • The backflow preventer shall be tested after any routine maintenance, repair, or overhaul before returning to service.

The need to establish a cross-connection program is amplified by occurrences of serious contamination of the water supply through cross-connections which have caused major water borne epidemics, minor illnesses, and even deaths.
